If starting in Kigali, you’ll drive 2.5 hours north to Musanze, or from Kampala, an 8-hour journey through the rolling terraces of southwestern Uganda to Kisoro. As you approach the border region, the dramatic silhouette of Muhabura begins to dominate the horizon. You’ll check into a lodge nestled near the park boundaries, such as Five Volcanoes or Lake Chahafi Resort, where you can enjoy a final high-carb dinner and a briefing from your guide. The evening is dedicated to gear checks and hydration, as the cool mountain air begins to settle over the landscape. This is a time for rest and mental preparation, knowing that tomorrow you will tackle the steepest incline in the entire volcanic chain.

The day starts at 7:00 AM at the park headquarters for a safety briefing and the assignment of armed rangers and guides. The hike is a relentless upward trek that transitions from lush bamboo forests—where you might spot golden monkeys—to alpine moorlands filled with giant lobelias. The trail involves two major rest stops at 3,117m and 3,860m; many hikers choose to turn back at the first, but those who persevere will reach the 4,127m summit. Here, a 40-meter-wide crystalline crater lake awaits, offering a tranquil mirror to the sky. From the top, you can see the other five volcanoes and the sparkling Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. After a celebratory moment at the summit, you’ll begin the steep descent, returning to your lodge for a well-deserved meal and a night of deep, restorative sleep.

On your final morning, you can enjoy a relaxed breakfast while reflecting on the previous day’s achievement. Before beginning your return journey, you have the option for a brief cultural encounter, such as visiting the Batwa heritage trail in Uganda or the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village in Rwanda. These visits offer a glimpse into the ancient lives of the forest people who once called these volcanic slopes home. Following lunch, you will begin your drive back to Kigali or Kampala for your departure flight.
