Our 2 Days trek to Nyabitaba camp offers a fast route into the Rwenzori Mountains National Park in Uganda. This specific 2 Days trek to Nyabitaba camp acts as a short mountain experience for hikers who lack the time for the full central circuit. The journey begins at the park headquarters in Nyakalengijja, situated at an altitude of 1,615 meters. From this point, hikers climb up to the camp which sits at 2,651 meters above sea level. This itinerary serves as an excellent acclimatization walk or a standalone nature trek. You will walk through deep montane forest, cross heavy rivers, and view unique wildlife like the Rwenzori turaco. The terrain demands good physical fitness due to the steep, muddy slopes and rough root systems along the path. Choosing a 2 Days trek to Nyabitaba camp lets you experience the lower zone of this famous mountain range efficiently, safely, and comfortably within a limited time framework for all visitors.
On day one of your 2 Days Rwenzori trek to Nyabitaba camp, you start early at the Nyakalengijja trailhead to register with the park rangers. The trail first passes through fertile Bakonjo farmland where local people grow coffee and bananas. You then enter the park boundary and follow the Mubuku River valley along a relatively flat path. The track soon changes into a steep climb as you cross the Mahoma River via a sturdy suspension bridge. From the river, you face a long climb up a forested ridge where wild chimpanzees and blue monkeys live. The ground is often wet, slippery, and covered in thick moss and massive tree roots. After four to six hours of steady walking, you reach the wooden cabins of the camp. Porter services help carry your heavy gear, allowing you to focus on navigating the steep forest trail safely, successfully, and effectively.
On day two of your 2 Days Rwenzori trek to Nyabitaba camp, you start with breakfast at the high ridge cabin. The morning offers clear views of the nearby Portal Peaks and the deep valleys stretching out below you. Before heading down, you can walk a short distance along the trail toward the John Matte camp to see the bamboo zone. You then begin the long descent back down the same steep ridge toward the Mahoma River crossing. Walking downward requires caution as the mud and slippery tree roots can cause unexpected slips and falls. The descent takes about three to four hours to reach the main park gate at Nyakalengijja. At the base, you sign out at the park office to successfully conclude your short mountain hiking trip with your mountain guides, cooks, and support team.
